Bruges Belfry and Markt: Climb, Tickets and the 366 Steps

Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read

The medieval Bruges Belfry rising above colourful stepped-gable houses on the Markt

Book a timed slot before climbing the Bruges Belfry, especially at weekends and in holiday periods. The tower admits a limited number of people at intervals, and even Musea Brugge Card holders are advised to reserve. The climb has 366 steps, no lift and one spiral staircase shared by people going up and down.

Ticket prices and timing

The official standard ticket is €16 during the main season, weekends and Belgian public holidays. On winter weekdays from 3 November to 31 March, the adult rate is €15. Reduced prices depend on age and date. These amounts can change, so use the official booking page for your visit day rather than an old screenshot.

Allow about an hour. Entry is normally possible only until 60 minutes before closing, and opening hours vary by season. Early morning and late afternoon tend to be quieter than the middle of the day. Strong wind or severe weather can cause a temporary closure.

What the climb feels like

The staircase gets narrower and steeper towards the top. Descending visitors have priority, while climbers wait at the intermediate stops. Those stops make the ascent more manageable: the treasury comes after 55 steps, the stone floor after 112, the Triumph Bell after 220 and the drum chamber after 333. The viewing level is at step 366.

There are no toilets in the tower itself; use those in the City Halls before climbing. Large bags, umbrellas, food and drinks go into the free lockers, and permitted bags must be smaller than 34 × 22 cm. There is no place to leave a pushchair inside the Belfry.

Who should skip the climb

The tower is not wheelchair accessible and is difficult for people who cannot manage steep, confined stairs. The official visitor information also says the courtyard and City Halls below are accessible and points to a tactile model on the Markt. A virtual 360-degree visit is available for anyone who cannot climb.

Babies and toddlers must be carried in a front-facing carrier, and children under 12 need an adult. The bells sound at regular intervals and can be very loud near the top.

Card or single ticket?

The €49 Musea Brugge Card covers one visit to every open Musea Brugge location for 72 hours, including the Belfry. A single Belfry ticket is better if this is your only municipal attraction. The card becomes more plausible when you also plan the Groeningemuseum, Church of Our Lady Museum and another city museum.

For a guided introduction to the square and surrounding streets, compare our Bruges walking tours. The Belfry ticket itself should be booked through Musea Brugge.
