How Do You Get to Bruges from Brussels and the Airport?

4 min read

A Belgian intercity train waiting beside a platform sign for Bruges

Take the train unless Bruges is one stop in a wider road trip. From central Brussels, the direct journey averages 1 hour 4 minutes. From Brussels Airport-Zaventem, some trains run directly and the airport quotes about 1 hour 25 minutes to Bruges; at other times, the journey planner may offer a change. Buy the destination shown as Brugge/Bruges, and allow about 20 minutes to walk from the main station to Markt.

From central Brussels

Brussels-Midi, Central and North all have useful departures towards Bruges. Choosing the station nearest your hotel is usually more sensible than crossing Brussels to board a nominally earlier train. Belgian rail tickets are normally for the route rather than a reserved seat, but the exact product depends on age and travel time. Let the official SNCB/NMBS app or ticket machine propose the suitable fare.

Check the live journey planner on the day. Works, weekends and public holidays can alter a familiar pattern. If you buy on board, the railway applies its on-board fare, so purchasing before departure is the cleaner option.

From Brussels Airport-Zaventem

The railway station sits below the arrivals and departures halls. Search from “Brussels Airport-Zaventem” directly to “Brugge”; do not buy a central-Brussels ticket and assume it covers the airport. The airport station has a separate supplement, automatically included in most tickets to or from it.

A direct train is easiest with luggage. If the planner shows a change, prefer a connection with reasonable transfer time over the shortest theoretical itinerary. Brussels-Midi is not automatically the best interchange: follow the live route offered for your departure.

From Bruges station to the centre

The historic centre is compact. The walk to Markt takes about 20 minutes and can itself become a pleasant entrance through Minnewater and the Beguinage. With heavy luggage, leave it at your accommodation or a station locker before tackling cobbles. Local buses are useful when walking is difficult; consult the stop display for the current route rather than relying on an old route number.

Driving adds little for a city-centre stay. Bruges rewards walking, while a car remains parked for most of the visit. Hire one only if the same trip includes rural West Flanders or destinations poorly linked by rail; compare the full itinerary through Discover Cars, including where you will park.

What to book after arrival

Do not tie a flight-day arrival to a tour with a narrow check-in window. For a full first day, the guided walk with chocolate stop and optional boat or beer starts at €25, lasts 2–3 hours and has a 4.4 rating from 4,941 reviews. Book it for the morning after arrival, not immediately after a connection you do not control.

Our recommendation

Use the direct train from Brussels or the airport and stay within walking distance of the centre. Choose a car only for a multi-stop regional itinerary. For orientation once rested, book the guided Bruges walk.
