Ghent from Bruges: An Easy Independent Day Trip by Train

Ghent is an easy independent day trip from Bruges: trains are direct, the railway reports an average journey of 28 minutes and the route has 93 trains on a normal day. You do not need a guided excursion simply to connect the two cities. The real planning question is how much of Ghent to attempt once you arrive.

Which Ghent station should you use?

Most services use Gent-Sint-Pieters, the main station. From there, tram lines 1 and 3 run towards the centre every 10 minutes according to Visit Gent. Walking to the historic centre takes about 20 minutes, while the Arts Quarter is roughly 10 minutes away on foot. This makes Gent-Sint-Pieters useful if you want to begin with the Museum of Fine Arts or the S.M.A.K. before continuing north.

Some connections and itineraries may also work through Gent-Dampoort. That station is about a 15-minute walk from the historic centre and can be convenient for the eastern side. Do not choose a station from its name alone: check the live rail planner, the stops of your exact train and any works on the day.

A realistic first route through Ghent

Begin around Korenmarkt and Sint-Michielsbrug for the classic view of the three towers. Continue through Graslei and Korenlei, then cross towards the medieval centre. From there, choose one substantial interior rather than treating every landmark as a photo stop.

Gravensteen is the obvious choice for a castle-focused visit. St Bavo’s Cathedral is the priority for visitors interested in the Ghent Altarpiece, while the Design Museum or one of the art museums suits a wet day. Opening days, timed admission and temporary closures differ, so confirm the one place that matters most before leaving Bruges.

Allow space for the streets between the sights. Patershol, the riverfront and the view from St Michael’s Bridge are part of the point of the trip. A schedule with a castle, cathedral, two museums, a boat trip and a long lunch is not efficient; it is a list that will make you watch the clock.

Bruges and Ghent are not interchangeable

Bruges gives you a more concentrated medieval centre, quieter canals away from Markt and a city that is easy to understand on foot. Ghent feels larger, more lived-in and more visibly mixed with student life and later architecture. The trip is worthwhile because the cities complement each other, not because one replaces the other.

If you have only one full day in Belgium and are already staying in Bruges, remain in Bruges. Leaving after breakfast and returning before dinner means sacrificing the early and late hours when the centre is calmer. With two or more full days, Ghent becomes a sensible addition.

Train planning without false precision

The Belgian railway describes the connection as direct, but an average is not a promise for every departure. Check the SNCB/NMBS app shortly before travelling for the platform, stops, engineering work and delay information. Buy the ticket through the railway rather than relying on an old fare quoted in a travel article; products and discounts depend on age and travel day.

Do not plan around the final possible train home. Leave a later service available as a buffer, particularly if you have a dinner booking or onward train in Bruges. Store luggage at your accommodation or use the station facilities rather than carrying it over cobbles all day.

When a tour would still make sense

A guide adds value when the focus is art history, medieval politics or a tightly organised group day, not for the transport itself. A private transfer may help a party with specific mobility needs, but confirm the vehicle, drop-off point and walking involved before booking. The filtered Bruges selection currently has no suitable Ghent day tour departing in Bruges, so we do not point you to a Brussels or Antwerp departure and pretend it starts locally.

For organised trips that genuinely leave from Bruges, compare our day trips from Bruges. Ghent itself is the occasion to use the railway.

What to arrange in advance

Choose your single priority interior and check its official page; the train itself can remain flexible. Save an offline map of central Ghent and note which station you intend to use for the return. If you arrive through one station and leave through another, confirm that your rail ticket permits the planned journey rather than assuming both names are interchangeable.

Comfortable shoes matter more than a detailed minute-by-minute schedule. The historic core is walkable, but the station transfer adds distance before the sightseeing begins. In poor weather, place the indoor priority in the middle of the day and keep the riverfront sections adjustable.

Our recommendation

Take a direct morning train, use Gent-Sint-Pieters unless the live planner makes Gent-Dampoort more convenient, and commit to one major interior plus a walking circuit. Return with time to spare. Skip the trip if it is your only day in Bruges; add it when you have enough time to appreciate the contrast rather than race between two checklists.
