How Long Does a Bruges Canal Tour Take? Planning Two to Three Hours

4 min read

Swans on a still canal beside old brick houses in the early light of Bruges

Plan half a day at most: the guided canal tours take 2 to 3 hours, and the boat part is only about 30 minutes of that. The small-group walk, boat and chocolate tour lasts 2.5 hours. If you are short on time, the two-hour small-group tour is the shortest bookable option.

The range on the last tour is the one to read twice. The listing does not say what moves it from two hours to three, so leave a full three in your diary.

Where the boat fits

The public canal trip lasts about 30 minutes without stops, and tickets are sold at the landing stage, where queues can form. In a guided package the boat is one block inside the programme rather than an extra on top. If you have only a short window, one of these packages gives you the water, a guide and the chocolate in about the time a single museum would take.

Fitting it around a day

Morning start. A 2.5-hour tour that begins in the morning leaves the afternoon free for one museum, such as the Choco-Story visit, which runs 1.5 hours. Together they use roughly four hours.

Afternoon start. Book it for early afternoon if you arrive by train around lunchtime. Keep the evening for dinner rather than a second timed activity.

Cruise or train day trip. If you have to be back at a fixed time, add the walk to and from the meeting point and a safety margin before your departure. Our Zeebrugge shuttle guide shows how to protect a ship’s all-aboard time.

Is it too long for children or for tired legs?

The programmes combine walking and sitting, but the summaries do not describe the pace or the number of stops. If anyone in your group tires quickly, ask the operator, or choose the 2-hour tour and plan a café break afterwards. The boats are open, and the landing stages involve steps.

Our recommendation

For a single block that is easy to plan, book the 2.5-hour small-group walk with boat and chocolate and keep the rest of the day open. If two hours is your limit, take the 2-hour small-group tour. If you want to see more of the city in a day, our one-day itinerary shows how to add the rest.
